What is the Critical Skills Occupations List in Ireland?
The Critical Skills Occupations List is maintained by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) and identifies occupations in Ireland where there are strategic skills shortages. Roles on this list are eligible for the Critical Skills Employment Permit, which offers significant advantages including a fast track to Stamp 4 permission after two years.
The list is reviewed and updated twice per year following a public consultation process. It is divided into occupations with a minimum salary of EUR 38,000 and those requiring a minimum of EUR 64,000. Occupations commonly found on the list include ICT professionals (software developers, data analysts, cybersecurity specialists), engineering roles, healthcare professionals (certain medical and nursing specialities), scientific researchers, and certain financial services roles.
Alongside the Critical Skills Occupations List, the DETE also publishes an Ineligible Categories of Employment list, which identifies roles for which employment permits will not generally be granted. Roles not appearing on either list may be eligible for a General Employment Permit.
Employers and prospective employees should check the most current version of the list before making an application, as changes are made regularly to reflect evolving labour market needs. The list is published on the DETE website and takes effect from the date of publication. Applications submitted before a list change are assessed against the list in force at the time of submission.
