What is a Critical Skills Employment Permit in Ireland?
The Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) is designed to attract highly skilled workers to Ireland in occupations where there are strategic skills shortages. It is one of the most sought-after employment permits as it provides a fast track to long-term residency in Ireland.
To qualify, the job must be in an occupation on the Critical Skills Occupations List maintained by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The minimum annual remuneration is generally EUR 38,000 for occupations on the list, though for certain roles such as those in ICT, the minimum may be EUR 64,000 if the occupation is not explicitly listed but the salary threshold is met. The applicant must hold a relevant degree qualification or higher.
The CSEP is issued for a two-year period. After two years, the holder may apply for Stamp 4 permission, which allows them to work in Ireland without the need for an employment permit. This is a significant advantage over the General Employment Permit. The employer must be registered with Revenue, trading in Ireland, and offering a genuine vacancy. The permit application is submitted by or on behalf of the employee through the Employment Permits Online System.
