Can I change employer while on a work permit in Ireland?
In Ireland, an employment permit is issued for a specific employer and a specific role. If you wish to change employer, you must apply for a new employment permit with the new employer before you commence work with them. You cannot simply transfer your existing permit to a new employer.
The new employer must submit a fresh application through the Employment Permits Online System (EPOS) on your behalf, or you may apply yourself with the new employer's consent. The application process is the same as for an initial permit, including the requirement for a labour market needs test for General Employment Permits (though this may be waived if you have held a valid employment permit for at least 12 months).
While the new application is being processed, you may continue to work for your current employer under your existing permit. However, you must not start working for the new employer until the new permit has been issued. Starting work without a valid permit is a breach of employment law and immigration conditions.
For holders of a General Employment Permit, after 12 months of continuous employment, the requirement to obtain a labour market needs test may be waived for a new permit application. After five years on work permit conditions (or two years for Critical Skills Employment Permit holders), you may be eligible for Stamp 4 permission, which allows you to work for any employer without a permit.
