Can I work while on a student visa in Ireland?
Non-EEA students holding Stamp 2 permission in Ireland are permitted to work on a part-time basis alongside their studies, subject to specific conditions. During academic term time, students may work up to 20 hours per week. During designated holiday periods (June, July, August, September, and from 15 December to 15 January), students may work up to 40 hours per week.
To be eligible to work, students must be enrolled in a full-time course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) and hold a valid IRP card with Stamp 2 permission. Students on Stamp 2A permission (non-ILEP courses) are not permitted to work at all.
Students do not need an employment permit to work within these limits. They will need a PPS number to be employed legally and to pay tax. Employers must verify that the student holds valid Stamp 2 permission and an IRP card before allowing them to commence work. Students who work beyond the permitted hours are in breach of their immigration conditions, which can result in refusal of future immigration applications or deportation.
It is important that students maintain their academic attendance and progress, as failure to do so may result in withdrawal of their Stamp 2 permission. Students who successfully complete their degree may apply for Stamp 1G under the Third Level Graduate Programme to seek full-time employment.
